Even with its ability to create physical polygon detail only where it’s needed, Sculptris has a much more apparent, and lower, ceiling. That’s mainly because zBrush is designed to handle sculpts of obscenely high polygon counts. More over, in terns of physical detail, you’re going to eventually run into a wall that many not exist in zBrush. ![]() However, be warned that it does not have nearly as many features as its big brother. Sculptris is a fine program, but it’s no zBrush. Under certain circumstances, you’ll also be able to transfer over that fine detail from the older model to the newer one thus preventing you from losing all of that hard work. Ideally, it’ll also subdivide more evenly and animate properly. Once the model is retopologized, you’ll have a new model that looks like the old one, but has a much cleaner edge flow and uses far fewer polygons to achieve the same results. Retopologizing a model basically means that you’re creating a new mesh whose vertices snap to the surface of the old mesh. Retopology refers to the act of creating a newer, more organized polygon layout over the older, disorganized one. You might have an area where you can squeeze a lot of fine detail out of, but one that is too unrefined and polygon sparse. Logically, a model with an uneven distribution of polygon detail also won’t sculpt evenly at higher subdivision levels. A model with poor poly/edge flow won’t animate properly. A little taste of the real deal can go a very long way.įirst off, topology refers to the flow of polygons and edges along the surface of your model. I mean, it’s probably been many years since you messed around with Play-Doh and such. Simply being able to actually feel the material in your hands or rake it out with a knife can give you a huge insight into how and why sculpting apps work the way that they do. I always suggest this to first time sculptors. There are cheap, non-toxic options like Sculpey and modeling foam that will allow you to dip your toe into the waters without making a huge mess. If you’ve never actually sculpted anything before then I would strongly suggest that, before getting dirty with Sculptris, you try a little real world sculpting first. Sculpting, as with everything, takes a little practice.
